When the furnace in your Louisville, KY, home turns on, you expect it to provide ample heat for your home. However, it can only do that with a functional blower motor. Here are three signs that could indicate you have a faulty furnace blower motor.

1. Unusually High Energy Bills

When your furnace blower motor malfunctions, it will hamper your furnace’s ability to maintain even temperatures. That will cause it to activate more often, using more energy in the process. If you start seeing unusually high energy bills, a faulty furnace blower motor may be the cause.

2. Weak Airflow

A furnace blower motor’s job is to pull in cold air and push heated air out of your home’s vents. Certain blower malfunctions can result in yours running at abnormally low speeds. When that happens, you’ll see a sharp drop off in airflow from your home’s vents.

3. Squealing or Rattling Noises

Two furnace blower motor components that often fail are bearings and drive belts. If your blower bearings fail, you may hear squealing sounds from your furnace when it runs. If you let the motor keep operating with failed bearings, it might seize and destroy itself.

Similar squealing sounds may result from a failing blower motor drive belt. Newer furnaces typically don’t have drive belts, however. If you have an older model, it may be vulnerable to this problem.

Rattling sounds may also indicate a failing furnace blower motor. Sometimes, they happen when the motor’s mounts become loose or break. They can also occur if your blower wheel comes loose or slips out of alignment.

The good news is that a failed furnace blower motor isn’t difficult for a professional to repair or replace. Contact Elder Heating and Air if you need furnace repair in Louisville, KY.
